Third Culture Kid: ‘A Regular Way of Life’ that Extends to More than Elite, Expat Kids

The longest and saddest goodbyes for me often took place over summer breaks. It was a time where my friends and I usually went “back home” to see our families. As an immigrant from a country 14 hours and a couple grand away, we could only afford it once every few years. This situation is…

Almost two months ago I made a really crazy decision to book a one way flight to the U.K. and the straight up truth is that it was really fucking hard. I see all my friends back home have their jobs and benefits and comfortable social circles and I can’t help but think why the fuck am I not there? I’m still figuring it out tbh. We’re all different. But I’m just here to tell you that if you really want something, the universe will conspire to make it happen. Breath. Be patient and work hard. London is a crazy-messy-mid-life-crisis-inducing whirlwind but for now it’s home. #fuckboris #fuckbrexit #london #canadahouse #peoplesvotemarch2019 s/o to @purple_squirrle’s new phone for dis pic.

Do you collect any trinkets from your travels? I naturally have a very slow and short-term memory so I feel I need something to hold onto moments with. I’ve collected everything from currency and magnets, to paintings and journals. But my favourite collection is probably my jewellery. I love picking up a cute pair of earrings here and midi-ring there so I can decorate myself with my experiences. When I was in Detroit this spring, I had a chance to sit down with Mr. Olayami Dabls in his African bead museum and talk about the heritage and stories these stringed orbs share. He had a heaping collections of beads dating back hundreds of years and told me that many African cultures wore them to signify spirituality, history, and social class. We talked for an hour and exchanged stories about how beads were also an integral part of Muslim culture and how my grandmother carried elaborate prayer beads too. I really didn’t think I’d find such a gem of a place in Detroit but my heart was so full after returning home. The world is overflowing with stories and sometimes all it takes is a conversation to trigger a human connection. Listen. Share. Ask questions. Repeat. #detroit #zahratravels #beadmuseum #africanhistory #museum #usa

After paying a small fee too the old man who turns the wheel, those who want to cross the river sit in the cage that levitates across the tides to the other side.
